On November 8, 2021, Breaking Defense reported that the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s C5ISR Centre released a new ‘pntOS’, a software allowing for positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) sensors that enable multi-domain operations and interoperability under the complete range of threat conditions found in rapidly changing hostile environments among land forces. C5ISR has a leading role with outstanding innovations in modern military capacities networking with global services, industries and research organisations. With its constantly developing new technologies, the U.S. Army provides land forces with the most precise and modern navigation in remote areas where GPS functions are not available for the primary means of communication. In addition, U.S. scientists designed the new software to contribute new features for PNT systems that can connect land forces during military operations. The latest development is the epitome of how the U.S. military uses all resources for future land modernization by ensuring overmatch capability through innovative acquisition and rapid integration of cutting-edge technologies.

Mike Caporellie, branch Chief of PNT emerging technologies at the C5ISR Center, announced that the software is closely related to the already existing network, combining new features to contribute to the modernization of land forces. By reducing the integration time and smoothing the transition, the overall aim is to get high standard technologies and all available capacities to the soldiers, fighting irregular enemies and constantly facing new challenges regarding their own security. The core feature of pntOS consists of an application programming interface, commonly referred to as software connecting programmes, to interact and communicate with each other.

The U.S. Army expects its latest development on the market by the end of 2021, equating to technology readiness level seven. pntOS will provide accurate and reliable PNT information to the land forces under conditions where space-based GPS may be limited or denied, thus enhancing the defence and security strategies.
