Greece Develops its First Surveillance Drone Programme in Reaction to Turkey’s Bayraktar

The Greek skies will soon be dominated by the newly launched multipurpose Archytas drone. As geopolitical frictions with Turkey have reached a critical juncture in the Aegean Sea, Greek defence and security officials welcomed the development of the Archytas prototype with great enthusiasm in the face of the threat posed by the Bayraktar TB2 operating in Ukraine’s war. This is nothing new, as Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan spares no instant in criticising Greece despite both countries being NATO members. But the past few years have been marked by a surge in territorial clashes and acts of intimidation, as territorial waters have been continuously contested by both sides since the 1970s. Such reasons might explain Greece’s decision to equip itself with a new generation of high-performance combat UAVs.

Modernisation in the Greek Army

Greece is engaged in the modernisation of its military forces amid the war in Ukraine and the tensions with Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea. In this regard, the Hellenic Defense Systems (HDS) and Nexter signed a strategic partnership to modernise and strengthen the Greek army’s infantry vehicles fleet.

Greek Government Asks Parliament to Approve Major Arms Deal

The Associated Press (AP) reports that the government of Greece is asking its parliament to approve a 3 billion-euro ($3.4 billion) defence agreement. The agreement in question is a purchasing deal for “three new French-made frigates,” negotiated between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Greek counterpart Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in September of 2021. According to the frigate manufacturer, the French state-owned company Naval Group, the first two frigates will be delivered in 2025 and the third in 2026.
