NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) Becomes Operational

On June 19th, 2023, NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) became operational (NATO, 2023a). DIANA is a platform which brings together representatives from state governments, private industry and academia to help innovators and businesses design start-ups and devise common standards to capitalise on emerging and disruptive technologies in accordance with NATO’s principles of responsible use, ranging from lawfulness and accountability to traceability and governability (DIANA, n.d.).

NATO Initiative Seeks to Accelerate Development of Defence Technologies

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO) initiative to foster the development of novel defence technologies is taking shape. NATO’s member states approved the charter of the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) on 7 April 2022 (NATO, 2022). DIANA, whose launch was announced in 2021, acts as a framework in which governments, academia, the private sector, and non-governmental organisations can come together to develop emerging and disruptive technologies (EDTs) relevant for security and defence (Machi, 2021).

Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA)

When the Covid-19 crisis led to a lockdown of all activities, the lack of digital literacy from governmental bodies and defence personal exposed both a new threat and an opportunity. Bearing this situation in mind, NATO members (NM) have agreed at the 31st annual summit, held in June 2020 in Brussels, to initiate the Defence Innovation Accelerator of the North Atlantic (DIANA) that aims to reach full operability capacities by 2023. DIANA is NATO’s version of the U.S Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It will reinforce transatlantic cooperation regarding critical technologies to assure the security and defence digital literacy of NM.
