Strategic analysis and the concept of security have undergone a major evolution since the end of the Cold War. Nowadays, threats are no longer exclusively location-based, but have become more horizontal and less defined. Their orientation assumes a hybrid shape, and they are becoming more difficult to frame, assess, and face. It is in this security context that NATO and the EU operate, a multipolar international system with players making use of unconventional warfare techniques, from the use of deniable proxies to new forms of pressure (e.g., energy supplies, foreign media control and propaganda, mobilisation of ethnic minorities abroad, cyber-attacks) to achieve their foreign policy goals.
The United Kingdom, among many other nations, has recently decided to increase their military presence in the Indo-Pacific in face of the security challenges that China has been posing to these Western nations (Sengputa, 2021). The deployment of a Navy fleet of this dimension has notoriously been deployed last in the 1982 Falklands War, demonstrating the importance of this military action and the significant geopolitical challenges that China’s expansion strategy presents.

In light of current poor cooperation, inadequate upgrade programmes and insufficient investments in European armament capacities, the development of a new generation Main Battle Tank (MBT) is particularly awaited, as it could heavily stimulate defence integration and military interoperability in Europe. Over the past decades and in the context of emerging hybrid threats, European land forces suffered from an increased deterioration of their equipment and capabilities. Priority was and is still given to advanced hybrid weapons technology. While these technologies are crucial in the new war theatres of cyber and space, conventional forms of military deterrence shouldn’t be overlooked as they remain one of the most effective and integrated military capabilities in Europe (Sabatino, 2020).
