Thermite-Equipped ‘Dragon’ Drones: Ukrainian Special Forces’ New Battlefield Arsenal

Ukrainian Special Forces have recently made use of a new generation of sophisticated drones, increasing their capacity to launch accurate strikes against Russian soldiers. These drones, referred to as ‘dragon drones,’ employ thermite, a highly incendiary chemical that burns at around 2,448 degrees Celsius (4,440 degrees Fahrenheit) (Lendon, 2024). This new strategy represents Ukraine’s shifting tactics in reaction to the ongoing conflict. It demonstrates Ukraine’s adjustement to the changing reality of the war, using cutting-edge drone technology and accurate attacks to outmanoeuvre its enemies.

The Legality of Nuclear Weapons

On 21 September, Russian Federation’s President Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilisation of Russian citizens to reinforce Moscow’s military deployment in the Russian war in Ukraine (Ellyatt, 2022). In his speech, Putin remarked that Russia will protect its territorial integrity with ‘all the means at [our] disposal’ (The Washington Post, 2022). The statement struck fear in the West, as the nuclear threat lurks over Europe. With the usage of nuclear weapons being now a tangible risk, questions have been again raised about the legal status of such armaments under current international law.

The four new NATO battlegroups will be stationed in Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Hungary. With these additional reinforcements, roughly 25,000 NATO soldiers will be present in Eastern Europe. The countries themselves provide about 290,000 soldiers. On land, the reinforcements serve mainly as deterrence for Russia, to show the Russians that invading any of these countries will have massive consequences.

A Step Forward for the North Korean War Industry: Hypersonic Missiles

In January, North Korea carried out six missile tests. 2019 was the last time it did so many tests. However, what is worrying is what they have been testing, rather than the number of tests. According to experts and North Korean media, the missiles tested on the 5 and the 11 January would be hypersonic weapons. If these claims are authentic, the balance of power in East Asia will change dramatically
