Abstract:
For decades, scientists have been warning about the impending existential planetary emergency to no avail. Transnational challenges, such as climate change, pollution, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity, further exacerbate existing security risks, thus requiring a swift and united European response. This article examines how the EU is responding to the triple planetary crisis as a matter warranting a security risk. To do so, the current state of security and defence aspects within the European climate change legal framework shall be assessed. The analysis demonstrates that, while some progress has been achieved at the EU level with the introduction of soft law, the lack of legally binding legislation undermines current efforts toward the consolidation of a common climate, security, and defence agenda. Finally, recommended lines of action are provided to help overcome this challenge.
