ABSTRACT

This paper discusses anti-submarine warfare (ASW), addressing conventional ASW platforms and doctrine against a backdrop of emerging capabilities. These include unmanned systems, non-acoustic detection methods, and advanced computing. Their potential to influence the future of ASW across its three core phases – detection, tracking, and engagement – is undeniable; however, significant operational, technical, and financial challenges remain, suggesting a foreseeable future in which submarines are likely to retain their stealth and overall strategic value. This paper is the first in a two-part series on undersea warfare.
